Canadian Diabetes Association – Diabetes Awareness Month Website

November 01, 2010

Message from Hugh O'Neill
President and CEO, Sanofi-aventis Canada

Hello. I’m Hugh O’Neill, president and CEO of sanofi-aventis Canada.

We’re part of the sanofi-aventis Group, one of the world’s largest healthcare companies, with more than eighty-five years of history in the treatment of diabetes.

Some of that history unfolded right here in Canada – in Toronto, in the 1920s, to be precise. That’s when our company made its first contributions to the fight against diabetes, by developing techniques for the large-scale production of insulin.

We can only imagine the sense of purpose of these early researchers and technicians, as they struggled to deliver on the promise of one of healthcare’s greatest discoveries.

We understand diabetes much better today, but the fight goes on. In my job, I have the privilege of working with many dedicated people who lead this fight: researchers, healthcare professionals, people with diabetes, colleagues in the pharmaceutical industry, and all the volunteers and advocates with organizations such as the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Some of these people have elected to tell their stories on this website. Their courage and their commitment are inspiring. They fuel our sense of purpose to keep looking for ways to prevent, treat, manage and even cure diabetes.

We’re delighted to partner with the Canadian Diabetes Association in creating this online forum. Thanks for watching.
