10 Tips for Healthier Eating

Eating healthier food doesn't have to mean making big changes to your lifestyle or depriving yourself of the foods you enjoy. Follow these tips on how to make healthier food choices every day.


1. Use a smaller plate (8 inches).

To help keep your portion size down, use a smaller dinner plate. You can always get seconds if you're still hungry.

2. Drink water with every meal.

Not only will you stay hydrated, but you'll fill up a little more on the liquid and a little less with the meal.

3. Eat your veggies first.

If you start the meal with an appetizer of vegetables (such as carrot sticks and hummus), then make a salad your first course - you'll fill up on vegetables and find yourself eating less of everything else.

4. End the meal with a piece of fruit.

Fruit is the new dessert and has none of the fats found in cream or cake-based desserts. In the summer, grill peaches or nectarines on the barbecue. In the winter, poach pears with cinnamon and ginger.

5. Check the menu in advance.

When eating out, check the menu in advance. Most menus can be found on the internet. That way you'll know what healthy options are available to you.

6. Make a list and bring it with you.

When you go to the grocery store, make a list and stick to it.

7. Take healthy snacks to work.

Veggies and salsa or hummus will help keep you away from the vending machine and the snack bar when you get hungry.

8. Buy whole grain bread.

Whether shopping at the supermarket or ordering a sandwich, opt for whole grain bread - it will provide you with more nutrients and fibre.

9. Take your time.

Chew your food. Eat slowly. Taste your food. You'll enjoy it more and you'll be conscious of how much you're eating.

10. Chocolate?

If you have small indulgences here and there, you'll avoid building up a craving and will feel less inclined to binge on that "less healthy food". Choose a small square of dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa (70% or higher).
