10 Ways to Burn More Calories at Work

The work place doesn't have to be an exercise dead-zone. Here are ten easy ways to incorporate more exercise into your workday.

1. Make your commute count.

If you can, walk or cycle to work, the extra calories you burn will really add up over time. If walking or cycling isn't an option for you, take the opportunity to walk by getting off the bus a few stops early or parking at the far end of the lot.

2. Strength in numbers.

Combine exercise and sociability by organizing an office walking or jogging group. Head out on your lunch hour for a quick workout or schedule a walk before or after work.

3. Take a stand.

Sneak some powerful calorie burning into your day by climbing the stairs at every opportunity instead of taking the elevator or the escalator. Make a note of your stair climbing and at the end of the week consult a Calorie Counter to find out how many calories you burned just by taking the stairs.

4. Have a ball.

Slumping into a chair is easy; staying balanced on a fitness or balance ball takes core strength. Use one and you'll be toning your mid-section all day long without even realizing it.

5. Step it up.

Sneak some powerful calorie burning into your day by climbing the stairs at every opportunity instead of taking the elevator or the escalator. Make a note of your stair climbing and at the end of the week consult a Calorie Counter to find out how many calories you burned just by taking the stairs.

6. Meet on the go.

Instead of meeting with a colleague in an office, have a brainstorm session or status update on the move. Walk through the building or do a lap outside in order to get both the blood and ideas pumping.

7. Get unplugged.

Instead of staying chained to the phone at your desk, get a headset and take calls while wandering.

8. Pick your hotel carefully.

If you travel for work, choose a hotel that has a fitness centre or a pool. Or better yet, put on your comfortable shoes and be a tourist for the day by walking around and exploring the sites. That way, you won't miss a workout even when you're working.

9. Find your competitive edge.

Start an office pool to see who can lose the most weight in a set period of time (say, 12 weeks). Having that reinforcement and support at work will keep you motivated and making healthy choices.

10. Keep exercise gear nearby.

Keep some exercise materials on hand at work (like resistance bands or small hand weights) and do a few exercises throughout the day.
