Why Cardiovascular Health is Important in Diabetes - Taking Care of your Heart!

Are You at Risk?
If you have diabetes, you are at risk of developing cardiovascular (heart) disease. Everyone with diabetes should try to change the risk factors that they can in order to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Risk factors that can't be changed:

  • Age (55 or older for women)
  • Having a family history of early heart disease
  • Having diabetes for 15+ years
  • Having problems with circulation (blood flow)
  • Having diabetes complications (like problems with the eyes, feet or kidneys)

Risk factors that you can change:

  • Having poor blood glucose control
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Having high cholesterol
  • Being physically inactive
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Not following a healthy diet

Assess Your Risk

In order to determine your level of risk, take the Canadian Diabetes Association's cardiovascular risk assessment quiz. Bring it with you to your next appointments with your doctor and diabetes educator, and ask them how you might lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
