Feeling Stressed?

Sometimes a little stress can be a good thing: it can be motivating by keeping us punctual and efficient. However, too much stress can make us feel defeated and sometimes overwhelmed.

 

Research has shown that stress has a significant impact on people with diabetes. A survey of more than 5,000 people living with diabetes showed that nearly 40% of them felt emotionally stressed about their diabetes and worried that they weren't fulfilling their family responsibilities. Nearly half of those surveyed said they worried about their diabetes getting worse.

Stress can make your blood glucose readings erratic and sometimes unpredictable. You should check your blood glucose more frequently during stressful periods.

During stressful periods, it's common to eat and sleep poorly or skip exercise routines. All of these things can make it much more difficult to manage your blood glucose.

Here are 4 strategies that are helpful in reducing stress. The more of them you follow, the better you'll manage your stress. And we encourage you to find specific things within each strategy that make sense to you and fit your lifestyle.

1. Physical exercise

2. Calming or relaxing activities

3. Emotional expression, which includes talking to people about your problems and finding ways to maintain your optimism and humour

4. Social support such as a diabetes support group
