Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada

Speech delivered by Thérèse Boucher
Senior Manager, Therapeutic Offerings, Oncology
Sanofi-aventis Canada
Montreal, Quebec

Hello and thank you for being here. My name is Thérèse Boucher and I am very pleased to be here today on behalf of sanofi-aventis to talk to you about colorectal cancer. This disease is the second-most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada and affects men and women equally. Every week, 413 Canadians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer and, despite medical progress made in treating the disease, some 171 of these patients will end up dying as a result of this illness.

A diagnosis of colorectal cancer can be extremely devastating for patients and their loved ones who are facing the challenge of their lives. It is for these people who are fighting this cancer and others who must also face it that it is so important that we increase the public’s awareness of this disease so we can prevent, treat and heal.

Since 2007, sanofi-aventis has been a proud partner of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada (CCAC), which has developed such memorable programs such as last December’s highly successful “Get your butt seen” campaign and the Giant Colon Tour—which we’ll discuss in more detail a little later on. Sanofi-aventis is committed to supporting the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada’s mission, which consists of increasing awareness of colorectal cancer, providing support to patients and promoting cancer screening to the public and rapid access to effective treatments.

Sanofi-aventis is determined to continue the fight against colorectal cancer by attacking the disease on every front. Whether it be through our innovative research strategies, our range of diversified treatments or our patient awareness and support programs, we are determined to improve the quality of life of colorectal cancer patients. Unfortunately, innovation is a lengthy process. To develop treatment options, we must continuously invest in research and development and make use of the latest techniques and technologies. We understand that the smallest medical breakthrough can have a considerable impact on the quality of life of patients and their families.

On behalf of sanofi-aventis, I would like to take this opportunity to express our enthusiasm for our partnership with CCAC, which will continue in 2011. As part of this partnership, we will be launching some very interesting programs aimed at improving the quality of life for patients and making Canadians more aware of colorectal cancer so that as many lives as possible may be saved.

It is my pleasure to hand over to Barry Stein, president of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Mr. Stein draws upon his extensive knowledge and his personal experience; as a colorectal cancer survivor himself, he has helped countless Canadians.
