Concert contre le cancer – Montreal Cancer Institute

February 04, 2011

Speech delivered by Benoit Gravel
Vice-President, Field and Operations
Sanofi-aventis Canada
Place des Arts, Montreal, Quebec

Bonsoir tout le monde.

It is an honour for me to address you tonight, at this event to encourage the research of talented scientists who are devoting their careers to the fight against cancer.

Our company has been involved in this fight for more than 50 years. It is our great privilege – and responsibility – to support and conduct the research that is leading to better treatments and to cures.

We know from experience that our chances are greatly improved when we work together. We believe that partnerships – between universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies – offer the best hope for conquering this disease. Ensuring that research is conducted here, in our own facilities and institutions, is a further source of hope. It keeps our families and our loved ones within reach of the world’s best. And it builds on our legacy as a leading health centre in the quest to beat one of the world’s most devastating diseases.

I know this fight is hard. And that’s why, tonight, I want to remind us all of the tenacity and patience of our researchers. Their task is monumental, and they know how much we’re counting on them.

Everyone in this room has been touched by cancer. We know its terrible effects. I’m sure we all dream of breakthrough discoveries and miracle cures.

At the same time we know that, in real life, our understanding of cancer is unfolding by degrees. Our progress is often incremental. Sometimes our triumphs might appear small. But they are not. Extending life by three precious months, offering a treatment that is a little less hard to bear, or discovering a targeted therapy to help a small group of patients – every step counts.

Every insight we gain, every improvement we make, lays another brick on the road to a world where we will one day understand, control and cure this disease. That is the source of our hope – the confident, unflagging efforts by these wonderful researchers, working for the benefit of all of us, right here in Montreal.

On behalf of the Montreal Cancer Institute, and everyone who has worked to plan this evening, thank you for your support.

And now, I invite you to spend the next little while listening to beautiful melodies that remind us why we love life, and why we try to preserve it.

Bonne soirée à tous. Merci beaucoup.
