Healthy Shopping Tips

Print our Nutrition Help guide that includes this handy shopping list of basics and take it with you to the grocery store on your next shopping trip!

Grains & Starches

  • Multigrain/whole wheat bread
  • Hot cereal e.g.: oatmeal (not instant)
  • Cold cereal that's high in fibre (look for 4 g or more per serving)
  • Whole wheat flour
  • White or brown rice (converted, not instant)
  • Regular or whole grain pasta (cooked al dente)

Fruits & Vegetables

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Frozen fruit
  • Canned fruit in its own juice
  • Frozen vegetables
  • Canned vegetables, like canned tomatoes (if they contain salt, you can rinse them off with cold water before cooking)
  • Dried soup mixes and boxes of soup (lower salt varieties)
  • Nutrition Label

Meat & Alternatives

  • Dried beans and legumes
  • Canned legumes, lentils and beans, chick peas and black, kidney or pinto beans - rinse with water before cooking
  • Fresh or frozen fish fillets
  • Canned fish or poultry packed in water
  • Peanut butter, hummus
  • Eggs
  • Turkey/poultry
  • Extra lean/lean meat

Remember these healthy tips:

  • Shop with a prepared list that includes foods from every food group.
  • Never shop on an empty stomach! You'll be more likely to pick up foods that you wouldn't normally choose if your stomach is rumbling at the supermarket.
